The problem is to make the mouse as far as possible redundant. With a mouse oriented application like the maps this may not be completely achievable. In addition to the API keyboard handler you can:

Use the keyboard to drag and zoom the map:

Press arrow keys for dragging.
Shift + arrow up or down to zoom in and out.

Change the map types:

Key 1 for Street Map.
Key 2 for Satellite Map.
Key 3 for Hybrid Map.

Set markers at the center of the map:

Press return.

Open and close an info window:

Type the letter of a marker to open its info window.
Type Esc to close the info window.
